On a steel structure plan, "HEA 200”, „HEB 200 "and"IPE 200 "marks may appear to be three similar beams at first. However, the letters are not ornaments: they identify different rolled sections. The number indicates a nominal size, not the capacity of a finished structural element. If the drawing, the list of materials and the steel ordered do not bear the same total marking, it shall be clarified before manufacture or on-site assembly.
Belt and spine: consisting of sections of shape I or H
In the cross section of such a profile, the two horizontal parts are called belts, the part running between them being called spine. The height in the scale tables h, the width of the belt b, thickness of spine tw, thickness of belt tf. No matter what data we are talking about: the installation site, details of the connections and structural calculation may be affected in different ways. The description of the profile is therefore a starting point and does not replace the full plan.
What is the indication for IPE, HEA and HEB?
In the product system of ArcelorMittal the IPE family of parallel belt I coupons; HE a wide-belt profile family. The M and B a HE different family size: the same nominal number HEA and HEB It's not the same cross section. These are not steel grades. The material quality and the actual gauge size shall be given separately. The IPE There are also different versions within the family, so "IPE 200 "shall not be shortened unpunished"IPE"to.
The same number of 200s, three different sizes
The example below is derived from the size plate of the manufacturer Orange Book. The figures for the three nominal 200 sections in the table show why it is not enough to choose or replace by the number. The mass refers to a one metre profile, not the finished structural element with connections and surface protection.
On a narrow screen, the table can be rolled to the side.
| Form | Height h | Belts width b | Gerinc tw | Tf | Mass |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HE 200 AHEA 200) | 190 mm | 200 mm | 6,5 mm | 10 mm | 42,3 kg / m |
| HE 200 BHEB 200) | 200 mm | 200 mm | 9 mm | 15 mm | 61,3 kg / m |
| IPE 200 | 200 mm | 100 mm | 5,6 mm | 8,5 mm | 22,4 kg / m |
The most easily noticeable difference is the belt width: in this size the IPE 200 belts 100 mm, the two HE 200 mm. M HEA The actual height of 200, however, is 190 mm, although the mark is 200. M HEB 200 spine and belts in the same manufacturer's board are thicker than the HEA 200 of the right parts. This explains the difference in weight per metre; does not give rise to HEB-is automatically called "better 'or a substitutable profile in all situations.
Why does this matter when you manufacture an industrial steel frame?
We don't just order long fibers for the steel frame. At the intended nodes, plates, holes, welded or twisted connections and mounting locations meet. Other belt width or thickness may also change their details. The weight and length of the actual element are not the same for lifting and transport planning. The cover photo shows a built-in steel frame, but the exact profile type of the elements on it cannot be identified from the photograph.
A marking does not in itself reveal the burden of the element as a column or beam. The length, the support, the direction of the loads, the quality of the material and the relationships count together. The selection of the appropriate gauge and the approval of a profile other than a plan are subject to a statistical and manufacturing rediscussion; comparison of weight per metre is not scaling. The best control for the construction is simple: the total gauge marking, size and material quality shall be identical to the approved design, the list of materials and the actual steel taken over.
Technical size sources: ArcelorMittal profile families, Orange Book: HE sections and Orange Book: IPE sections. The above dimensions are examples of these manufacturers' tables; they are not a specific one Alabama Szer Kft.- project material list or statistical plan.

For contact, please send the approved drawing, full slip markings, material quality and the required manufacturing or assembly part. If a different profile has arisen, its acceptance should be clarified by the designer before ordering or manufacturing material.
